U.s. Government s Presidential Selection Process - 851 Words

There has always been a history behind everything that the U.S. government has done. So why would the presidential selection process be any different. When looking at this procedure, unlike the Electoral College, the nominating of the presidential candidates are not spelled out in the constitution. Seeing as the constitution was written in the late 1700’s there were no political parties to speak of. At the beginning of 1796 members of the U.S. Congress would meet informally to agree on their party’s nominee. This started the political parties we know today. When they voted for who they wanted it was known as â€Å"King Caucus†. This system of voting lasted for 30 years. It was broken down in 1824 because of the decentralization of power in the political parties due to the westward expansion of the U.S. National nominating conventions replaced the dying â€Å"King Caucus†. It started in 1831 by the Anti Masons. They met in a saloon in Baltimore Marylyn to choose a candidate and a platform in which they would run their campaign on. A year after that the Democrats met in the same place and did the same thing. After that it became a thing that the Major parties and even minor parties did to hold their national nominating conventions. During these conventions state delegates would attend to put in their own word and say who they wanted to win the election they were having at the time.
